Mar 8    Behind the Glass: Glassmaking in Medieval Nigeria

Newly-discovered glass beads, crucible fragments, and raw glass from Ile-Ife, Nigeria, are evidence of a massive workshop for making glass beads for West Africans a thousand years ago. Dr. Abidemi Babatunde Babalola, a McMillan Stewart Fellow at the W.E.B. Dubois Institute at Harvard University, will discuss the results of his archaeological excavations at Ile-Ife, where he has discovered the earliest evidence of glassmaking in sub-Saharan Africa. Previously, glass beads in Africa were thought to be made from glass imported from Europe. Dr. Babalola’s research demonstrates the technological sophistication of West African glassmakers before the European encounter.

Dr. Babalola received a Rakow Grant for Glass Research from The Corning Museum of Glass in 2017.

Mar 10    Corning Art + Feminism Edit-a-thon

Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to women working with glass.

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women. Let’s change that!

This is a free event, and no editing experience is needed. We will provide tutorials for beginner Wikipedians, reference materials, and refreshments. Please create a Wikipedia account before the event. Bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. A limited number of laptops will be available for those who need them. For the editing-averse, we hope you will stop by to show your support.

We invite people of all gender identities and expressions to participate, particularly transgender and cisgender women.

We encourage you to RSVP by Friday, February 23, but drop-ins are welcome. RSVP to rakow@cmog.org or +1 (607) 438-5316.

Mar 24 - Mar 25    Bacon on the Lakein

You read it right… we said BACON! The wineries have paired tantalizing bacon dishes with CLWT wines for your pleasure. Your taste buds will thank us later. At every winery, leave a ticket stub in the piggy bank for a chance to win a BBQ Bacon Basket. One lucky person will win a BBQ Smoker!

Besides sampling bacon infused dishes, you’ll sample a wine that compliments that dish, and also be offered up to 3 more additional wine tastings.

In addition, make sure to visit each of the 14 wineries to be eligible to win a BBQ themed gift basket containing BBQ sauces, utensils, and so much more! Just tear off a stub from your ticket at each winery and deposit into a Cayuga Lake Wine Trail Piggy Bank. The more wineries you visit the more chances you have to win!

Saturday 10-5pm, ALL 14 wineries are participating.
Sunday 10-5pm, ALL 14 wineries are participating.

Tickets:

Each ticket is good for the whole weekend, to visit each winery once.

Single tickets are $35 (plus tax) and include:

  • 1 souvenir wine glass
  • 1 wine and food pairing at each winery
  • 3 additional wine tastings per winery
  • 1 recipe collection
  • A chance to win a BBQ themed basket at each winery

Discounted designated driver tickets are available. The DD gets all the same perks as a regular ticket, minus the wine. They also get a DD travel mug, rather than a wine glass. $17.50 for a single (plus tax).

Packages that include tickets, transportation and accommodations are also available.

Be sure to buy your tickets early, we have a limited amount available per weekend.

If you’re part of a large group (15+), we ask that you contact the office for scheduling assistance. We try to keep track of and maintain as many large groups as we can to prevent over flow and clogs at the wineries. We reserve the right to limit the number of large groups purchasing tickets.
