Mar 6 - Mar 11    Local Artist Week

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a full-time artist or craftsperson? Join us at The Corning Museum of Glass from March 6 through 11 as we give you an unprecedented look into the lives and techniques of artists living, working, and making in and around Corning and New York. Throughout the week, flameworkers and hot glassmakers will demonstrate production-style making in the Amphitheater Hot Shop. During these demonstrations, you’ll witness first-hand the precision, dexterity, and speed required of six different artisans and studios.

Then, come back to the Amphitheater on Thursday evening when the participating makers join us for an informal panel discussion. During this time, audience members can ask questions about everything from the processes and techniques of making, to the booking and selling of work after it’s made. At the end of the week, each artisan will have previously finished work available for purchase in the Makers Market and take one last turn demonstrating in one-hour time slots in the Amphitheater Hot Shop. Visit with the makers, see the work they create, and support a local artist.

Pursuing one’s dream to be a working artist can be a challenge.  It takes determination, imagination and pure grit.  Many people have built their lives around their craft, but have you ever wondered what it takes to become a full-time, self-sufficient glass artist? From identifying a saleable product, to design and production, to running and managing a self-supported studio, there is an art to being an artist that is rarely seen by the public.

Join us on Thursday, March 9 for a special evening in the Amphitheater Hot Shop as we welcome six working glass artists from Corning and across New York State for a panel discussion on the challenges and rewards of pursuing this life, moderated by hot glass programs manager, Eric Meek.  The audience is encouraged to bring questions to this informal presentation.

Mar 17 - Mar 19    Watson Homestead March Maple Family Weekend
Have you always wondered where real maple syrup comes from? Have you sugared in the past and wish to share this special tradition with your children? Do you choose pure
maple syrup over Log Cabin©?

Bring your family and join us in the peaceful and relaxing setting of Watson Homestead for an opportunity to immerse yourself in the process of maple sugaring, while spending quality time with those you love.

Throughout the weekend you will get an opportunity to participate in the process of making maple syrup. Everything from tapping trees, collecting buckets, evaporating away water, feeding the fire, and more. At the end of the weekend, you will return home with maple sugar candy and syrup that you actually helped make.

Making maple syrup takes time, however, when not sugaring you may want to read by the fire, play a game of carpetball, take a hike, join in an arts and craft project, help man the fire, or simply relax on your own. Our desire is that a weekend spent together will strengthen your family’s bond, making lasting memories, through an authentic hands-on experience. We can’t wait to see you in March!
