Jun 3     Finger Lakes SPCA Paws and Pairings Gala

We will be hosting our Paws & Pairings Gala at the Pleasant Valley Wine Company Visitor Center on Friday, June 3rd, 2016 from 6:00-9:00 pm.  This is our signature fundraiser as well as an opportunity for us to highlight our orphan animal care services and vital programs which support the human-companion animal bond.  Additionally, we will again be recognizing members of our community who uphold the values of our organization and who help to make our area kinder and safer for both animals and people.

Our Paws & Pairings Gala will feature Pleasant Valley wines and champagne and will be catered to provide a delicious array of foods.  The night will also be made memorable by our extraordinary silent auction, raffles and live music.  Guests will also learn the latest progress update of the River's Edge Capital Campaign and the construction of our new shelter.

We hope you will consider becoming a sponsor of our event.  Your generous contribution will benefit both the animals entrusted to our care and our humane programs. Without your significant kindness and financial support, we would be unable to provide for animals in need or provide services that prevent animal cruelty and animal homelessness.  The sponsorship form describes how your contribution will be featured in our promotional materials and communications. To ensure your inclusion in advanced promotional materials, we would need your commitment to a sponsorship on or before Monday, May 2nd.

Thank you for considering a contribution that will help us to reduce and prevent animal suffering in Steuben County. Jun 18    Wegmans Corning 30th Anniversary
When Wegmans Food Markets opened a store in Corning in 1986, people drove from miles around to check out the biggest supermarket most had ever seen. Some left their homes at dawn to get to the store as it opened, to see what “one-stop shopping” was all about. Just imagine all those foods, and being able to rent a movie, fill a prescription, get stamps, or order photo prints on your grocery shopping trip!

In fact, so many people were waiting outdoors for the grand opening to commence that store officials opened the doors early to let the eager crowd in. Since then, Wegmans in Corning has grown bigger and better, and is firmly rooted in the daily lives of Corning-area residents.

“We’re part of the social life of our small town,” says Store Manager Garret Callahan. “It’s hard to get through a shopping trip without running into someone you know. There’s also a level of pride customers have about the store. You often hear them refer to this store as ‘my Wegmans.’”

About one-third of the store’s 325 employees have worked there for more than 10 years. Several have been there since opening day, including Mary Hale at the customer service desk and Linda Rossman in the bakery.

“So many of our people have been with us for years and years that this anniversary celebration will feel like a family party,” says Callahan.

Saturday, June 18 - HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY (open to the public):

·         Cake and coffee reception in the Market Café. Rossman, who has worked continuously at the store’s bakery since the grand opening, is overseeing the decoration of a three-tiered cake with images from the store’s photo archive.
·         “Mix and Mingle” with veteran employees in the Market Café. Walk down memory lane with familiar faces. Eighteen employees are celebrating 30 years of service; 33 employees have at least 25 years; 62 employees have at least 20 years; and 103 have at least 10 years of service. Many of these store “veterans” will be on hand to connect with customers and share recollections.
·         Food sampling throughout the store, featuring the fresh tastes of summer.
·         30th anniversary donations: Each of the 18 employees with 30 years of service will choose a community organization and Wegmans will donate to that organization to honor him or her.

Though Callahan himself was just finishing eighth grade in 1986 when the Corning store opened, he began his career with Wegmans six years later at the Corning store in 1992. He was a student at Corning Community College, working part time slicing cold cuts in the deli. After graduating from college later that year, he began working full time at the Corning store. Over the next 10 years, he kept an eye out for advancement opportunities and worked at various Wegmans stores in New York’s Southern Tier and in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. In October 2012, he returned to Corning as the store manager.

“Lots of things have changed in the way people shop for food over the past 30 years,” says Callahan.  “People are looking for fresh foods, but they often have less time to shop and cook, so they appreciate being able to buy packages of ready-to-cook meat or seafood, and cleaned and cut fruits and vegetables.  Organic foods are continuing to grow, along with regionally sourced foods that are raised or produced near our stores.”

On the other hand, he says, some things haven’t changed at all. “Pharmacist Jim Fazzari has been here since the store opened, taking care of our customers for 30 years. Think about the trust that’s built on relationships like that.”

Capsule history of the Corning store:

1986     Corning store opens June 22, the first Wegmans Food Market in New York's Southern Tier.  With a footprint of 86,500 square feet, this “superstore” is the largest in the region. It features distinctive brick archways along the front of the building to complement the turn-of-the-century architecture of Market Street in the picturesque town of Corning. This “superstore” offers one-stop shopping 24-hours a day.

Inside the store, the bakery, deli, seafood, meat and produce departments all feature open food preparation areas so customers can watch as their orders are prepared.

The store incorporates new design features, including pre-engineered walls that allowed construction in the dead of winter, an upgraded security system and an energy-efficient hot water system. Compressors and other machinery normally placed on the roof are instead put inside the building, for easier maintenance and to give the building a cleaner, more appealing look.

1992      Addition of an 8,000 square foot "Market Cafe" brings the store’s footprint to 98,204 square feet.
2002      The store’s pharmacy is remodeled after Wegmans acquires Rossettie Pharmacy.
2006      The store adds an Old Fashioned Sub Shop.
2007      The store remodels Nature’s Marketplace, enlarging its aisle space.
2008      The store adds a specialty beer section and a gelato case.
2009      A fresh foods bar and Patisserie arrive, and the bulk foods section is remodeled.
2010      Cheese Shop is remodeled; thin-crust pizza is added to the pizza menu.
2012      Frozen food cases are updated.
2014      The store’s vestibule is enclosed and its sign is updated in the script style Wegmans uses today.

Recently, as part of the store’s 30th anniversary celebration and the 100th anniversary celebration of Wegmans Food Markets, the Corning store increased its financial support to Pathways, Inc. As a result, Pathways, a not-for-profit organization that provides educational, rehabilitation and mental health services to about 2,000 area families, was able to feature Jim Kelly, former quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, at its annual fundraising dinner.

Jun 30    R-Cubed: Staffing, Part 2: Retain

R3: Staffing

Part 2: Retain

This new, three-part series is focused on resolving staffing and workforce issues.

Part 2: Retain is a seminar on how to keep the qualified employees you've found.  Led by Andy Taylor, this session will highlight employee engagement:

Let’s be honest, valuable employees are worth their weight in gold!  They get the job done, and in more ways than one, make a huge difference to the bottom line.  When they leave morale often tanks, productivity suffers, and the expensive and time consuming search for a replacement is often exhausting!

Did You Know?
  • A high performer often delivers 400% more productivity than the average performer.
  • High performers usually leave organizations quickly when their needs aren’t met and pursue better opportunities elsewhere.

At This Workshop:
  • Learn three simple and powerful actions that you can do as a manager to help retain your key employees.
  • Understand your managerial approach.  Does it help retain key people or is it pushing them away?
  • Discover how Southwest Airlines, the Sheraton, Nestle and Chick-Fil-A keep their best people.
