Join The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes for a 4-month reading and discussion group focused on Banned Books. The Banned Books group will meet once a month from September through December.
4 months. 4 banned books. 4 facilitators. This is a challenging time for readers and those safeguarding our right to knowledge. This reading and discussion group aims to bring together the book community to uplift and support our right to read whatever we want. Throughout this reading and discussion group, we will read the chosen books of our 4 facilitators followed by monthly discussions about the topics presented in them. When there's a book out there that someone doesn't want you to read, read it anyway, and challenge the assumption that reading is dangerous.
This group is a safe space for those who want to explore the motivation behind banning books, the topics held within these books, and what we can do to support free and uninhibited access to knowledge. While this is a safe space for discussion, hateful, misleading, or discriminatory comments will not be tolerated. Anyone making comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, misogynistic, or otherwise willfully ignorant will be asked to leave the group.
Every effort should be made to attend all 4 discussion sessions (see below), as these groups fill up and have a waiting list. Books will be provided free of charge to the group after registration in mid-August. All meetings will take place at The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes from 6-8pm.
This group is free and open to the public. Registration is required and is open until Friday, August 16. There are only 15 spots available, sign up now.
