Muslim Journeys Reading & Discussion Group

In a time when international rhetoric has made the word “immigration” synonymous with “invasion,” it has become dangerously easy for us to perceive other individuals as a single, threatening entity. The gift of literature is that it removes us from the specifics of our own experience and immerses us in the experiences of others. Facilitated by Professor Emeritus Louise Sullivan-Blum, this reading and discussion group will allow us to examine a variety of Muslim journeys, and discuss the ways in which the joys and challenges of these individual stories enrich our own journeys, both as individuals and as members of the larger community. The series will meet monthly from September through December in the Southeast Steuben County Library Conference Room. Books will be provided by the Humanities New York.

Books we will be reading:
  • Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi
  • Minaret by Leila Aboulela
  • How Does it Feel to Be a Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America by Moustafa Bayoumi
  • Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, The Struggle for the Soul of a Generation by Eboo Patel

You can join us for one session or for all four. Please register in advance for the sessions. Dates are as follows:

  • September 17, 6-8pm
  • October 15, 6-8pm
  • November 19, 6-8pm
  • December 17, 6-8pm

Books will be provided by Humanities New York. Please pick up books in advance at The ARTS Council, 79 W. Market St.
