Indian Art and Contemporary Identity

As Native Americans become increasingly ubiquitous throughout America, Native peoples have become avid consumers, as well as producers, of popular culture. Yet popular culture is a double-edged sword. American Indians have frequently been portrayed as, at one extreme, innocent children of nature, and at the other extreme, bloodthirsty savages. These hurtful stereotypes are deeply ingrained in American culture, and they are all but impossible to avoid. This unique exhibit features works by contemporary American Indian artists who confront stereotypes, investigate popular culture, and explore modern, myriad Native identities. Included in Museum admission.
